Forest Row Forward

OVERVIEW

Objective:

A group of residents in Forest Row, Sussex, inspired by “Flatpack Democracy” by Peter Macfadyen, aimed to assume responsibility for the Forest Row Parish Council. This group, known as Forest Row Forward, sought to engage the community and improve local services through consultation and collaboration.

Approach:

After attending committee meetings and presenting the importance of brand design, I led discussions to establish the brand identity and strategy for Forest Row Forward. Together, we devised the name Forest Row Forward and the tagline “Together we can...” to convey unity and empowerment. The brand was designed to be accessible and welcoming, with an orange-red color chosen for its call-to-action effect. The bold yet handmade logo symbolized collective effort, while the squared paper background reflected collaboration and note-taking. The tagline “Together we can...” featured a gap for residents to share their concerns and aspirations.

Results:

The branding strategy for Forest Row Forward effectively communicated the group’s mission to the village. Leaflets, stickers, posters, roadside boards, and a website were produced to engage residents and promote the campaign. Photographs and videos of candidates, taken at a local farm, added authenticity and personal connection to the campaign. Through collaborative efforts and community involvement, Forest Row Forward successfully conveyed its message of collective action and positive change. All but one of the available seats on the Parish Council went to a member of Forest Row Forward.
